SOLAR FAQs

Q: Will it be difficult to sell my home with panels on them.

A:  We are confident that anyone with our system in place on their roof will not have any problem selling their home.  if anything it should add to the value of your property.

Q: Will my roof be able to withstand the additional weight?

A: The solar panels have been designed to be lightweight and should have impact on the roof however this would be dependant on the standard of the existing roof.

Q: How long does it take to fit them?

A:  This would be dependant on the location but we expect this to be around two days, with another half day to erect and take down the scaffolding (when the homeowner does not have to be present). Our electrician will need access to your loft space in order to fit a voltage inverter and one of our specialist meters. It is not a disruptive process at all. It is quite straightforward.

Q: Will the panels make our roof more insecure if its windy?

A: No. The panels fit very closely against the roof so there is minimal space for wind to blow under them.  The fixing system has been rigorously tested to ensure stability in even the most severe weather conditions. As stated before, Germany is the world leader in annual PV installations and the climate is very similar to ours.

Q: Are Solar panels fragile?

A: Solar technology has been designed for 25 years and have been shown to be both robust and reliable. See ‘Our Products’ for more details as to the rigorous testing that our panels have been subjected to. Our solar panels are encapsulated in both toughened glass on exposed areas and a weatherproof resistant polymer on the underside.

Q: Will our roof tiles be damaged in the installation?

A: we are an MCS approved installer and as well as being trained in solar PV installation all our installers have been chosen due to their extensive previous experience in working on roofs. In the unlikely event that a tile is damaged in the fitting process, we will replace it at no cost to you. Everything we do is fully insured and therefore we are responsible for any damage (should there be any).

Q: Will I have to change Electricity Supplier?

A: No, you will retain the same provider and will still have the right to swap and change suppliers as and when you wish.

Q: Do the panels make any noise when they are generating the electricity?

A: No, there are no moving parts.

Q: Will I still receive an electricity bill?

A: Yes, because you will still be with your main Electricity Supplier. However, it will be reduced by your solar panels.

Q: Just how much money will I save each year by using this free electricity?

A: It depends entirely how you manage your electricity usage. If you use timer switches to ensure that you are using equipment such as washing machines, tumble driers, dishwashers etc. during daylight hours we are advised that you could reduce your electricity bill by about a half.

Q: Do the pannels turn on and off?

A: They are working all the time. When there is no daylight, they are simply on ‘standby’. You don’t have to switch them on or off.

Q How would I know which electricity supply I am using in my house?

A: When the solar panels are fitted, you use your electricity as normal. If there is electricity being produced by the panels when you use anything electrical it will use that first automatically. If there isn’t enough being produced for what you need, or if it is night-time, then you will automatically use electricity from your usual supplier.

Q: Will my electricity supply be disrupted?

A: Only when our Electrician completes the installation and is checking the system.

Q: What happens if we don’t use all the electricity the panels produce during the day?

A: It is fed back into the national grid automatically.

Q: Will I receive a certificate for all the electrical work for when I sell the property?

A: Yes.

Q: Do I have to buy special electrical equipment to use?

A: No. You can simply go about your life as normal.

Q: Who insures the panels?

A: They are automatically covered for product liability by the manufacturers.

Q: Can I use more than one electrical appliance at a time?

A: You can use however many appliances you wish. What the panels don’t produce, the rest will be drawn from the grid. You won’t notice ANY difference at all.

Q: Is the UK sunny enough for Solar Panels

A: Our solar panels are powered by light, not heat, so they do not need to be in direct sunshine. There is sufficient light, even on a cloudy day, for our solar panels to harvest the energy they need to generate electricity to power your home. Accordingly, our panels will generate from sunrise to sunset. That means at the height of the British Summer you could get around 17 hours of free electricity every day.

Q: Solar panels don’t work in the Winter.

A: Our solar panels work well in the winter even when the days are shortest. As soon as day breaks, the light is absorbed by the panels and they immediately start to generate electricity. The only thing that can inhibit the output from our panels is a snowfall that blocks the light, but even when that does happen it rarely lasts for any length of time.

Q: The installation will be too complex and disruptive.

A: Our highly trained and efficient fitting teams can fit an entire roof in two days. Most of the installation technology will actually be tucked away in your loft space and next to the incoming electricity supply. It is not a disruptive process at all. It is quite straightforward.

Q: Do you need planning permission?

A: In England and Scotland, you don't need planning permission for most home solar electricity systems, as long as they're below a certain size - but you should check with your local planning officer if your home is a listed building, or is in a conservation area or World Heritage Site. Installing certain renewable energy technologies, such as solar panels and biomass boilers, has now been made a lot simpler thanks to Permitted development rights introduced on 6th April 2008 in England and 12th March 2009 in Scotland

Q: Permitted development rights

A: In England and Scotland, changes to permitted development rights for renewable technologies introduced on 6th April 2008 and 12th March 2009 respectively, have lifted the requirements for planning permission for most domestic micro generation technologies.

The General Permitted Development Order (GPDO), or the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Domestic Micro generation) (Scotland) Amendment Order 2009 grants rights to carry out certain limited forms of development on the home, without the need to apply for planning permission. The scope of the GPDO in England and the TCP (GPD) in Scotland now extends to the following technologies:

Q: Solar PV and solar thermal (roof mounted) permitted unless:

A: The panels protrude more then 200mm when installed.

Q: Ground Mounted solar panels permitted unless:

A:The solar panels are no higher than 4m and at least 5m from any boundaries. The total size of the solar system is limited to 9m² or 3m wide by 3m deep. Only 1 stand alone solar installation is permitted

Always check with your local authority to find out if you require planning permission or not, the information on this page  is for guidance only.
